The island of Tenerife is part of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife province, which includes La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. It is the largest of all the Canary Islands with a population of 890,000 and boasts several UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The island has a great variety of activities, including sailing tours, national and natural parks, cultural and culinary riches. Add to this the island’s excellent hotel accommodations and you’ve got a unique holiday destination.
Tenerife’s surroundings include places of unrivaled beauty such as the Teide National Park which was declared a World Heritage site in 2007 and is one of Spain’s 12 wonders. The park holds a great variety of wildlife, vegetation and the Teide volcano, which is Spain’s largest. One World Heritage site worth visiting is San Cristobal de la Laguna, known simply as “La Laguna” which still holds the beauty of an unfortified colonial city.
Another well-hidden treasure found in Tenerife is Teide Observatory, which is the largest solar observatory in the world. The island (in addition to Chile and Hawaii) is one of the best places in the world to watch the skies. The observatory dates from 1964 and today the public is welcome to visit and discover the wonders of the universe through its telescopes and different scientific projects developed daily in the laboratory.
