Penedès is located only 30 minutes' drive from Barcelona. Famous for its beautiful landscapes and excellent wineries, Penedès produce some of the best white wines and sparkling wines in the country. Additionally, the region offers high quality local cuisine, which makes excursions and visits to the area even more attractive. Below you will find some of the most recommended and admired guest-friendly wineries, that run excellent visits in English.

Top 10 wineries in Penedès


This winery has a history that dates back to 1385 according to Latin documents: Llopart is is a family owned business located in a privileged area with spectacular views of the Montserrat Mountain and the winery is specialised in group visits with interest in the wine making tradition.

The wines
Llopart has become synonym to excellent Cava- sparkling wine but the winery also produces high quality white wines and grape juice from the native grape of the region Xarel.lo. Llopart Leopardi 2005 is considered an exceptional Cava that received 92 points in the Peñin Guide (Macabeu 40%, Xarel·lo 40%, Parellada 10%, Chardonnay 10%). Clos dels Fossils Chardonnay 2009 is another recommended white wine made of Chardonnay and with 90 points in the Peñin Guide.

Guests can choose between several types of tours, but we recommend the visit that includes the private country house of the Llopart family that dates back to the XIV Century. This is where the first bottle of Llopart cava was made in 1887. Try the emblematic Cava 'Gran Reserva 1887 Original', visit the vineyards with the oldest vines “La vinya del Paulino”, or taste local snacks paired with the cava.

Mas Comtal

The Mas Comtal winery produces a wide variety of wines (red wine, white wine and several speakling wines) and is one of the top producers of Penedès. The winery does excellent visits for groups.  Mas Comtal is located in an exceptional landscape and has a historical cellar - some of the vaults in the cellar date back to the Romans 2.000 years ago. Several of Mas Comtal's wines are listed in the top wines of Catalonia.

We recommend to try the famous red wine Antistiana, the smooth Chardonnay-based Petrea, the sparkling wine Brut Reserva and the dessert wine Lyric Solera. All of the wines are organic, produced ecologically.

The winery visit
A visit in the winery involves a walk through the vineyards with splendid views, or a ride on Segways through them. The visit ends with a tasting of 3-4 of the winery's organic wines, with the possibility of combining them with paired cheeses, smoked salmon or with a local Catalan brunch.


The Family Winery Gramona is one of the best sparkling wine producers in Spain and they organize exciting visits to their cellars. Gramona is also one of the oldest wineries in the region of Penedès.

We would strongly advise you to try their excellent sparkling wine Gramona Celler Batlle 2000, that has received 96 points by Robert Parker. You might also like to try the white wine Gramona Mas Escorpí Chardonnay 2009 (100 % Chardonnay) that Mr. Robert Parker awarded with 94 points.

A visit in this winery introduces you to the winery's pioneer eco-sustainable cellars. It is possible have a guided visit through the vineyards (and you can even do horse-riding through the fields), visit to their historic 'Cava' (cellars) where the oldest wines are kept. Of course, every visit end with a wine tasting.


Torres is the biggest winery in Spain, and the business also own wineries in Chile and North America. Torres was founded in 1870 and is devoted to an environmental and sustainable wine production. The Torres wines are shipped to more than 140 countries.

Alongside the international presence of Torres winery's products, their most prestigious red wine Mas La Plana 2007 has received 93 points in the Wine Advocate and achieved more than 100 awards. The wine is made of Cabernet Sauvignon. Another wine in the similar style is Reserva Real that has received 96 points in the Wine Advocate. The wine is made of the estates' best Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

You can choose from a variety of different tours, amont them guided tours by sommeliers, or you can combine wine tasting with paired tapas, as well as join other activities organised by the winery like an evening at the estate including dinner, concerts and stars observation. The winery at Penedès is the main establishment of the Torres family business.  


Codorníu is famous for having invented the cava in Catalonia - the sparkling Spanish wine - using the méthode champenoise, and it is one of the oldest wineries in Spain. This family owned business has a history going back to 1551.

Anna de Codorníu Blanc de Blancs Reserva is a superb sparkling wine made of Chardonnay, Parellada, Xarel·lo and Macabeo grapes. It takes its name from Anna de Codorníu, one of the important ancestors of the Codorníu family. Finca La Fideuera Gran Reserva Brut is another attractive sparkling wine made of the xarel·lo variety. The wines has received 93 Parker points.

All of the visits to Codorníu combine architecture, the gardens and tasting of some of the winery's excellent sparkling wines. During the visit, you will be able to admire the modernist cellars designed by the architect Puig i Cadafalch – a student of Antoni Gaudi. In combination to cava and wine tasting, the winery offers several dinner options and events.

Jean León

The founder of this interesting winery is linked to the movies in Hollywood. Jean León (his real name was Ceferino Carrion) was born in Santander in Northern Spain, but his adventurous character made him cross the Atlantic Ocean from Spain in persue of a career in the movies. He teamed up with James Dean to open the restaurant 'La Scala' in , and later on came back to Spain to create his own winery in the Penedès wine region.

The Jean León Vinya La Scala made out of Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the winery's best wines and has received 93 points in the Spanish Peñin Guide. The crisp Jean León Viña Gigi is a chardonnnay-based white wine with 92 pts in the Peñin Guide.

A visit to the winery can includes walking in the vineyards, cycling, riding segway. Another possibility is the make-your-own-wine-experience. The visits can be combined with a lunch or a tour in a hot air balloon to enjoy the colourful landscapes of Penedès.
