Priorat has a total of little more than 90 wineries - below you will find a list of the 10 very best wine producers.
Since Priorat's revolution in the 1980's and 1990's the wines haven't stopped to rise in quality. The general leve of Priorat's wines is high, but two handful of wineries are extraordinay - read about such wineries as Alvaro Palacios, Ferrer Bobet and Costers de Siurana below.
Alvaro Palacrios is the most famous of Priorat's top wine producers and arguably the best. Álvaro Palacios was brought up in Rioja and took part in the family business Palacios Remondo but came to Priorat in the beginning of the 1980's invited by René Barbier and other local wine makers, experiencing that this wine region with more than 3000 hours of sun and less than 400 mm of rainly yearly, and a soil rich in licorella (slate) has perfect conditions for producing high quality wine.
Bodega Alvaro Palacios produces a wide variety of wines in Priorat, amont them the Camins del Priorat, Finca Dofí, Les Aubaguetes, Les Terasses & Vi de Villa. His top wine L'Ermita may be Priorat's best wine, and is certainly the most expensive and one of the most pricy wines in Spain: L'Ermita goes for around 1100-1200 €/bottle in most years.
René Barbier is another of Priorat's most famous wine makers in Priorat, and probably the most important pioneer. René Barbier came to the area in 1981 and started changing the methods of the wine region. Clos Mogador makes the following wines: Com tú, Manyetes Vi de Villa, Clos Mogador, Clos Nelín
Another of the top producers in Priorat. Mas Doix is located in Porrera and produces four wines: Salanques, Les Crestes, Doix and Doix 1902 Carinyena Centenaria. The winery has won many prizes and Doix has received up to 98 Parker points.
One of our favorite wineries in the region of Priorat. Beautiful architecture in the middle of a dessert-like landscape. The winery makes some of the best wines in Priorat. The winery was born of the friendship between Sergi Ferrer-Salat and the enologist Raul Bobet. They produce Ferrer Bobet, Ferrer Bobet Selecció Especial & Ferrer Bobet Vinyes Velles. This winery offers visits (highly recommended!).
Clos Erasmus was founded in the 1980's by Dafne Clorian, one of the 5 pioneers that started the change in the wine production in he 1980's and 1990's in Priorat. The winery produces two wines Laurel and Clos Erasmus. Unfortunately, the winery does not organize visits for groups.
Another historic winery in Gratallops. Carles Pastrana & Mariona Jarque opened the winery in 1981, and have been producing high quality wine ever since. The winery makes three wines: Clos de l'Obac, Misere and Kyrie. The winery organizes visits with tasting of 4 wines, and it is possible to do vertical tastings.
Mas Martinet produces ecological wines at their winery between Falset and Gratallops, The winery was founded by Josep Luis Perez, when he came to Priorat in 1981 together with René Barbier, Carles Pastrana, Dafne Clorian and Alvario Palacios.
Clos Figueras produces some of Priorat's best wines, among them Clos Figueras, Font de la Figuera and Serras del Priorat. This winery is also a fantastic place to visit. The owner Christopher Canan is most welcoming and at the winery you can enjoy a fabulous lunch.
A small family based winery that produce both red and white wine, among them Vinyes Altes, Vinyes Baixes, Clos Petó Blanc.
Another must-see winery, because of its history, its wines and the location close to the old moanstery that gives name to the winery. The Scala Dei Winery's history dates back longer than any other winery in Priorat and it has been maintaining the tradition of quality wines through some of Priorat's tough years. All the way back to the World Exposition in Barcelona in 1888, this winery was represented at the exhibition with its wines.
