Rioja is the most famous wine region in Spain and one of the best in the world. Legendary wineries like Marques de Riscal, Muga, Artadi and Rioja Alta open their doors to the visitor and we highly recommend to go to this beautiful wine region on a private tour. Rioja has a total of more than 500 wineries - below you will find a list of the 10 very best wine producers.

Top 10 wineries in Rioja



Artadi is one of the very best wineries in Spain. Artadi was founded in 1985 by a group of winemakers. It was first called the Cooperative of Harvesters from (Rioja) Alavesa, or in spanish Cooperativa de Cosecheros Alaveses. During the 1990's Juan Carlos López de Lacalle succeeded in rise the quality of the winery and making it one of the best in Rioja.

In this period the winery expanded with two wineries: Bodegas y Viñedos Artazu in Navarra and Bodegas y Viñedos El Sequé in Alicante. The wines are ecological, and the winery also works with biodynamics. In every wine region the work with the most important grapes: tempranillo, garnacha and monastrell in Rioja, Navarra and Alicante.

Ysios is owned by Pernod Ricard and is located in the region of Rioja Alavesa at the feet of Sierra de Cantabria. The beautiful winery is designed by Santiago Calatrava. The winery only makes high quality reserva wines made of grapes from old tempranillo vines. The high position of the vineyards guarantees high quality grapes with high quality maturation.

Marques de Riscal

A fabolous winery in the wine region of Rioja that combines world class architecture and. The beautiful winery has both a historic building and amodern hotel designed by Frank Gehry (the architect behind the Guggenheim museum). This winery is one of the oldest in Spain, founded in 1858 in Elciego (Álava).

Marques de Murrieta

Another marquis (marqués in Spain) who founded a winery in the 1850's! Marques de Murrieta's history goes back to 1852. Today it is Vicente D. Cebrián-Sagarriga, Count of Creixell, who has the winery together with his sister Cristina.

The winery prodces high quality wines from Finca Ygay and has a total of 300 hectares of vineyards. Together with the original winery Finca Ygay Marques de Murrieta has a modern winery that was inagurated in 2014. The same family owns another fabolous winery in the wine region Rías Baixas called Pazo de Barrantes with 12 hectares of albariño vines close to the Umia river.

Bodega Contador

Bodega Contador is one of the very few wineries that has succeeded in getting 100 Parker points (in 2004 and 200. Park Points are given by the famous american wine critic Robert Parker). The winery not only makes top wines like Contador, but also wines for a larger market like A mi Manera (for less than 20 € per bottle) and Predicador (for around 25 €/bottle) and Qué bonito cacareaba (for around 40 €/bottle).

Dinastía Vivanco

A less known winery, but a high quality producer. The winery was born in 1990 in Briones, founded by Pedro Vivanco in Rioja Alta. Today, Pedro's sons Santiago and Rafael are the constinuing the proyect. The winery has more than 300 hectares of vines, mainly with tempranillo but also graciano, masuelo and garnacha. The winery also makes white wines with malvasía, viura, and garnacha blanca.

One of our favourite wineries in Rioja. One of the most important wineries in Haro, Rioja in the Station Quarter (barrio de la estación). Highly recommended wines are Muga Aro, Selección Especial and Prado Enea. Muga is one of the few Spanish wineries to make their own barrels.

Roda is a fantastic winery, focusing on how to get the best quality out of their grapes. The winery produces legendary wines like Cirsion. The winery was founded in 1987 and the name come from the two first letters of the founders Mario ROtllant and Carmen DAurella. The winery is located close to Muga.

Bodegas Roda make sure that the grapes have optimal quality. Vineyards are located in both Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja, which makes it possible to play with different types of wines in the winery. Wines like Roda and Roda I and Sela, are all terrific alternatives to the top wine Cirsion.

Sierra Cantabria

Sierra Cantabria is a winery owned by the Eguren family that uses the best grapes from their vineyards of the Sierra Cantabria. Among the best wines of Sierra Cantabria are Sierra Cantabria Cuvée, Organza, Amancio and El Bosque. Sierra Cantabria make their wines in the new winery that the Eguren family has built using stones from Rioja.

Viña Tondonia (Aka Bodegas R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia)

This winery represents a fascinating mix of history and modernity. Zaha Hadid designed the modern cellar, but the old cellar is also still in use, 4 generations after the winery's founding. Wines like Viña Cubillo and Viña Bosconio Reserva are both excellent wines for less than 25 €, while Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva has earned up to 96 parker points.
